5005 - Intro

reference 5005

The Big Ingenieur makes an immediate impression with its imposing 45.5-mm case. The extra-large 51113 calibre with its Pellaton automatic winding system and seven-day power reserve requires more space. Not everyone, of course, works close to strong magnetic fields, so the designers did away with the soft-iron inner case in favour of a sapphire-glass back.

Highlights

  • Limited edition of 500 watches in platinum
  • Pellaton automatic winding
  • 7-day power reserve
  • Power reserve display
  • Diameter 45.5 mm

Price: $12,200 — $42,000

TIME FOR GREAT ENGINEERS

True greatness comes from within, but it is often clearly visible from the outside. The Big Ingenieur, for instance, has an impressive 45.5-millimetre case that is necessary because the extra-large 51113 calibre with its Pellaton automatic winding system and seven-day power reserve, requires more space. Not everyone, of course, works in high-energy environments, surrounded by strong magnetic fields, so the designers did away with the soft-iron inner case in favour of a sapphire-glass back. This modification provides an unimpeded view of the fascinating movement, significantly reduces the height of the case and makes the watch much more comfortable to wear. The watch is available in platinum and rose gold with a silverplated dial or in stainless steel with a dial in black. Another by now unmistakable IWC feature – the last day indicated in red on the power reserve display – adds a striking touch.

The 50000-Calibre Family

The 50000-calibre family represents a wide range of different movements that have one thing above all in common: their unmistakably large dimensions. They feature some of the best ideas ever to appear in an automatic movement (among them the legendary Pellaton winding system) together with a balance and Breguet spring for maximum precision. Apart from this, the IWC 50000-calibre family with its 7-day power reserve represents a giant leap forward in the history of automatic movements: 1,960 complete revolutions of the rotor wind the movement for a full 7 days.

After 2 months of searching for my first watch, the Big Ingenieur it is!

I thought the design values of the timepiece reflect the same that I resonate at 29 years of age- dynamic, versatile, resilient and relentlessly energized.

Im very proud to have the 5005 around my wrist everyday- the experience is truly exhilarating and energizing.

    HiHi,
I am new to IWC & Big Ingenieur might be my next watch. But I have some questions before I will buy such 18K Gold watch (in Germany for example all authorized retailers I met in Frankfurt am Main don't know nothing about what they sell, I asked about such expensive watch but got no answers, they all treat you like: look, IWC is luxury, 20,000EUR what questions do you have? Don't you know it's luxury watch, are you stupid? etcetc) but I do have questions (my Mercedes E-Class Avantagrde 2005 model was 45,000EUR so half of Mercedes entitles me to more info than telling me it's luxury), this was a reason I didn't buy this watch at Christ on Zeil street because salesmen there treated me like nuts, 1 minute talk they wanted 20,000EUR while when I bought Finnish sauna for the house (same price) salesmen gave me confidence for the money, sauna really is great & is in perfect condition after 10Y like new. So this was 2Y ago & I bough Rolex Daytona 18KYG leather strap price was good, 35% below list. My other watch was Union Glashütte Belisar Chronograph (this watch was a mistake, though cheap at 2,600 EUR but not worth even this) so back to IWC. What I don't understand it's 12 Bar water resistance, I found in 1 forum that 12 Bar is enough for diving as stated by IWC but I have doubts regarding this claim, till now only screw down watches I tried were suitable for diving, all watches I tried & lost a lot of money!!! without screw down leaked water even after 1st dive, so I doubt if winding crown is not a screw like, it will leak o matter what gum is protecting it, chronographs that claim 200m water resistance or more, all leak water at depths even below 5-10 metes, some leak sooner others later but all lak & I speak only about expensive watches I tried. So what guarantees I can get from IWC that Ingenieur which is 12 Bar resistant will not leak if I dive 40 meters in Red Seafor example? It's winding button is not screw, I don't get how the movement is protected from water pressure when diving. The other question is about ho watch works i extreme conditions hange, I may be in plus 40 degrees Celsius fr months then arrive to a destination where temp. is minus 20 degrees, I also found out that all watches suddenly run faster or slower after such change in temperature, even by 2-3 min. a wek which is too bad for expensive watch. Does IWC offers such explanation, wil their movements work precise or it' like they told me in Germany: IWC is luxury watch, give us 20,000EUR & good bye ;-) So IWC I want real answers before I buy or ignore me & I will find where to spend my money & get value for it.

    Hi mark,
    It has crown screw in.
    1 bar is 10 meters.
    12 bar is 120 meters.
By the way, if u dive often, u might consider aquatimer automatic 2000 with rubber strap, having 200bar.
Or aquatimer deep two, it has depth indicator.
    :)

    Dear Mr. MarkShark,

there are several points to your question which need to be considered. The Big Ingenieur does have a screw-in crown and is water-resistant up to 12 bar.
Since it`s a highly complex and often misunderstood field please see our detailed explanation here:

    http://www.iwc.com/de/water-resistant/

Concerning the accuracy we can say the following: IWC adjusts its watches using its own rigorous in-house criteria. For example, IWC does not tolerate a watch running slow, which is permissible in a chronometer test. Apart from this, the owner’s habits and lifestyle play a not unimportant role for a watch’s accuracy. Automatic movements behave differently with wearers who are physically very active than with people who lead quieter lives. Any divergence from the tolerances mentioned is not so much a question of function but is primarily one of adjustment and wearing habits. All external influences like big temperature differences do have an impact on the accuracy of a mechanical watch.
Most important we suggest to contact again an authorized retailer or an IWC boutique to arrange an appointment. We are sure, that the friendly staff will offer you an excellent service.

If you have any further questions please contact us here: http://www.iwc.com/en-us/contact/

    Best wishes from Schaffhausen
